A natural event such as volcanic eruption and meteor impacts can cause earthquakes, but the majority of naturally-occurring earthquakes are triggered by movement of the earth's plates. Volcanoes are opening in the earth's surface. When they are active they can let ash, gas, and hot magma escape in sometimes violent and spectacular eruptions.
